Christmas traditions around the world. 4th Grade.

Christmas is a Christian tradition. So, don't think that everybody celebrates it at everywhere. In places such as China, Arabian countries or India you will not see Christmas lights at the streets, adorns in the houses or presents under the fir. However, Christians in different parts of the world have some odd traditions that now we're going to see:

INDIA

There are 25 million Christians in India. And they have changed the fir by a banana tree! They also use the banana tree leaves to decorate their houses and streets. Look at the photo below:

CZECH REPUBLIC

On Christmas day, single women have a singular tradition in Czech Republic. They throw a shoe at the door house. If the shoe toe points to the door, it means that they are going to find their true love very soon.

 FINLAND

On Christmas eve, Finns use to visit the tombs and graves of their ancestors, lighting candles in memory of them. Is like our All Saints day (1st of November), but colder and with snow (Look at the photo below)

Friday I'm in love. Song. 4th grade.

I don't care if Monday's blue
Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too
Thursday, I don't care about you
It's Friday, I'm in love
Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart
Oh, Thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday, I'm in love
Saturday, wait
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday, never hesitate
I don't care if Monday's black
Tuesday, Wednesday, heart attack
Thursday, never looking back
It's Friday, I'm in love
Monday you can hold your head
Tuesday, Wednesday, stay in bed
Or Thursday watch the walls instead
It's Friday, I'm in love
Saturday, wait
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday, never hesitate
Dressed up to the eyes
It's a wonderful surprise
To see your shoes and your spirits rise
Throw out your frown
And just smile at the sound
Sleek as a shriek, spinning 'round and 'round
Always take a big bite
It's such a gorgeous sight
To see you eat in the middle of the night
You can never get enough
Enough of this stuff
It's Friday, I'm in love
I don't care if Monday's blue
Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too
Thursday, I don't care about you
It's Friday, I'm in love
Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday, Wednesday, break my heart
Thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday, I'm in love
Do-do, do-do, do-do, do
Do-do, do-do, do-do, do
(Oh, oh, whoa, whoa)

Santa Amalia's spooky stories IV. The orange light.

Hernán Cortés Water tower.
1984. May. 2:00 a.m in the morning. José María Encinar is driving from Hernán Cortés to Santa Amalia. He is a musician, and he cames from a musical show with his band. Suddenly, he sees a great ball of orange light (about 8 meters wide) on Hernán Cortés water reservoir tower. The light fades quickly; so he does not give it in consideration. "Maybe lack of sleep", he thought.

But some kilometers after this point, between Santa Amalia and Torrefresneda, crossing Burdalo's bridge, the light appears again. This time there is no doubt. It flies slow, and José María clearly notices a metallic structure under the luminescence. There are also other small balls, like fireflies, flying around the main light and going down and up to the river (maybe absorbing water). The car engine stops by itself. The music band is terrified, and they become to think they will be attacked. Finally the small lights got inside the big one, flying up very quick, and dissapearing in the sky night. After some tries, José María can start the engine again and quickly he drives away from there.

Slenderman. Halloween story.

In accordance with legend, slenderman was an evil and killer woodcutter who fell down into a hollow plenty of brambles, dying there. Rats ate his face; for this reason he appears without facial expression. Where you should see eyes, nose or mouth, there's only white flesh.

Slenderman usually appears in dark forest areas. People say that he attracts and kidnaps children under 12 years, taking them away to his secret den. A child kidnapped by Slenderman never comes back again.

Description: a terrifying figure with a slender appearance (very tall and thin, with long arms and long legs). Witnesses also point that he has got large tentacles (between four and eight), maybe as a remembrance of the brambles which caught and killed him. He always wears a black suit (jackect and trousers) The most disconcerting feature is that he hasn't got face.

Here you can read some about his powers:

1.- He can fly
2.- He becomes into different long natural elements: trees, logs, etc.
3.- He prefers the night, although he can appear during the day (mainly under the trees)
4.- He can hypnotize children; also adults.

Santa Amalia's spooky stories III. The ghost whirlpool of Búrdalo.

Burdalo's bridge, on Torrefresneda's road.
Búrdalo river is a short afluent of Guadiana. It is no more than 65 km long. It is mainly shallow (no more than 1,5 - 2 meters deep). But, as all rivers, it has some dangerous areas...

When going from Santa Amalia to Torrefresneda, you have to cross Búrdalo by the N - 430 bridge. There, the river reaches more than 5 meters deep; even more. On that place, from time to time, it appears "the ghost whirlpool": a strong and unexpected water current which swallows everything it takes.

Burdalo river next to San Isidro.

The ghost whirlpool not only appears on that place; it also shows up between San Isidro's bridge and the ford (the ford: an old river pass over some tubes whereby the water flows). Old people still warn children about the river when going to San Isidro's shrine on May, the 15th: "Don't swim in the river!!", they say "Búrdalo looks peaceful, but is treacherous!!" And certainly it is. More than one and more than two Amalianers drowned in its waters when fishing in the river was an earning - life option.

Water whirlpool.
What to do if a water whirlpool swallows you?

If you have the misfortune of being swallowed by a whirlpool (in Búrdalo or somewhere else), not all is lost. There is one last option you have. Don't fight against the whrilpool. Let him absorb you; and when you will be at the bottom of it, swim away (all meters you can), and then try to reach the water surface. Thus, you will have left the whirlpool behind you, being safe and sound.

Santa Amalia's spooky stories II. The abandoned old flour factory.

Old flour factory.
If you are not too old may you still remember a ruinous abandoned building which was paced at Canseco street. It was the old flour factory, active until the 1950s, when something frightening happened. On October, the 28th or 29th (the date is not sure) a grinder machine trapped and killed Manuel Díaz. Manuel was a good worker, a citizen of Santa Amalia, beloved and appreciated by everybody. His death was a great trauma in town. His work partners asked for a factory stopping in order to bury and honor their died friend; but the boss refused. The money was more important than the death of a good worker. So the grind machine was cleaned of blood and flesh and the labour continued. One curious fact about those awful happenings is that the body of Manuel Díaz couldn't be recovered completely. A hand was missed inside the machine, and so, the corpse was buried uncompleted. Replacing the missed hand, a wooden limb was set in the coffin.
Old grinding machine

After this sordid event strange things started to happen in the factory. Many people noticed like pinches from an invisible hand. Machines started and stopped automatically, with no human intervention. Doors opened and slammed by themselves... Some workers even saw a dark shadow walking by the corridors in the evening, at the same time that Manuel had died. The staff was terryfied. They call the priest of Santa Amalia, who told them to set candles in the windows in order to drive away some malefic spirit. But it was counterproductive: the candles melted in a few minutes, making the window bars trembling. Finally the workers refused to work on that cursed place, running away from there. The boss could not find anyone for working in the factory; and so, it finally closed in 1954.

The factory sleept quiet for many years, with all its history inside. Recently was demolished. But be careful. If one day, at the end of October, you decide to go along Canseco street at the last hour of evening, walk fast and don't look up from the ground. Perhaps you will see (or listen) things you don't like. Flames floating in the empty lot, strangee noises, the clinking of metal things... Even a grim shadow looking for his missed hand.

Halloween 2021. Santa Amalia's spooky stories I. Chozos de la retama.

La Reina and Infante corner.

We set this story in actual Infante and La Reina streets, in Santa Amalia. The time: 1821 (two hundred years ago). On this area, on that age, there were some sheepherd huts (before the foundation of Santa Amalia). In accordance with tradition, in those huts some strange women and men lived. It is said that they could invoke spirits; also to cure illnesses and pain; and to bless (or curse) people and cattle. Summarizing: they were witches and wizards.

Shepherd huts.
Actually the area is occuped by houses; but if you ask old people on these streets, they will probably tell you about strange shadows appeared at midnight on the yards; about metal elements which suddenly rust in a few days; or even about strange blue flames which, in the night of October, the 31th, fly from roof to roof. Maybe the ghosts of those old witches? Who knows...

Natural disasters III. Tsunami.

A Tsunami is a giant and powerful sea wave caused by a submarine Earthquake. The submarine ground rises, pushing the water away. At the begining the wave isn't very tall: in fact, if you are in a boat at the sea, you don't feel anything; only a small movement under your feet. But when the wave arrives to the sea shore, it quickly grows, reaching meters in height.

There have been very high tsunamis along the History: Lisbon and Cádiz (1755), Malasia (2004) or more reciently, New Zealand (2016) A Tsunami wave can reach more than 20 meters, destroying and killing everything. The most destructive one was in Malasia: more than 230.000 people died in that natural disaster.

Actually there are Tsunami alarms in many parts of the world (including Spain) Some hours before the impact of the wave the police advises people in order to evacuate the coast.

Natural disasters II: Asteroid.

Asteroids are solid objects which spread all over the Solar System. There are millions of asteroids. Their size varies a lot, from the smaller ones (like small stones) to the bigger ones (kilometres and kilometres of metal, rock and ice)

Resultado de imagen de asteroid

Asteroids would be a boring matter if they were not dangerous. But they are.The impact of an asteroid in our planet could imply terrifying consequences, depending on its size:

1.- Small asteroids: local destruction (like a bomb)
2.- Medium size asteroids: they can wipe out a city and its surrounding area.
3.- Big asteroids. they can devastate a large region, resulting in global climatic changes.
4.- Very big asteroids: they can destroy our civilization, causing a global disaster.

Resultado de imagen de asteroid

For this reason astronomers are constantly monitoring the asteroids which are close to Earth, trying to predict trajectories and possible collisions. They have created a scale for grading asteroids thinking in their danger. It is the "Torino scale", where asteroids are classifyied from 0 to 10, being 0 no risk and 10 global destruction.

Volcanic eruption in La Palma island. 6º

Cumbre Vieja volcano.
What's happening?

On September, the 19th (Sunday), at 3:12 p.m, a volcano started in La Palma island (Cannary archipielagus), in a region called "Cumbre Vieja". After 15 days, it is still spitting ash, lava and toxic gas.

Why?

Canary island volcano.
Cannary Islands are volcanic: they have been formed with lava, rising up from the bottom of the ocean. So, volcanoes are not an extrange thing there. In fact, every island in Cannary archipielagus has got volcanoes: Teide, Teneguía, Shield volcano of Lanzarote...

Is it dangerous for population?

A volcano can kill in some differet ways:
Lava flow.
  • Lava: it is a flow of molten rock, usually above 1.000º degrees. It usually spreads at 5 km per hour (the pace of a human being); although it can be slower.
  • Earthquakes: when the magma is rising up from the mantle, it makes the land tremble. These trembling can destroy houses and buildings, killing people.
  • Tsunamis: the volcano can produce landslides; and if these landsildes reach the sea, they create a giant wave.
  • Toxic gas: volcanoes release very venomous gases to the atmosphere: sulfur dioxide and Clorhidric acid are two of the most deadly ones. Breathing them can kill you.
    Pyroclastic flow.
  • Pyroclastic flow: perhaps the most deadly way in which volcanoes kill. A pyroclastic flow is a giant cloud of hot ash (over 300 degrees). It springs suddenly from the volcano, running down from the cone to lower areas. It is very fast: about 100 km per hour. If the cloud catches you... You are in trouble.
Cumbre vieja volcano has got lava and Toxic gas. The lava flows quiet, and it is not a danger for people. The gas is toxic; but authorities have set a security area in order to avoid intoxications.

When will it stop?

It is difficult to say, because geologists don't now the exact amount of magma under the volcano. They reckon about 70 more days of eruption; but they aren't quite sure.

Banana fields destroyed by lava.
What has being destroyed?

Many things: banana crops, about one thousand houses, more than 30 km of roads, watering pipes... A complete disaster.

What about the people which have lost everything?

In a natural disaster human beings cannot do anything; only to help people who has lost everything. In this way, Spanish Government will destinate 210 million € to palliate the disaster. This money will reach directly people victim of the eruption.

2º. Review for "body parts" and "face parts".

Sugar. 6º.

Sugar is a natural product which can be found in fruits and vegetables. Thus, when you're eating apples, strawberries or cherries, you're eating sugar; a healthy and natural sugar.

The problem appears when humans take plants with a high sugar content (like beet or sugar cane, see below) and transform them into industrial sugar. This sugar isn't natural, and damages your health.

Resultado de imagen de sugar caneResultado de imagen de beet

Resultado de imagen de sugar factoryThe photo on the left shows a sugar factory. There, by means of chemical processes (addition of phosporic acid, calcium hydroxide or calcium phospate), the sugar that you eat in everyday meals is produced. This sugar is unhealthy, and produces a great series of illnesses.

Here I refer you the five most common illnesses related to sugar consumption:

  1. Obesity: the direct consequence of eating too much sugar. Your weigh increases, and you get fat. Obestity results in many other problems, mainly in relation with heart and circulatory system. Scientists asseverate that overweight people die much before than not overweight persons.
  2. Hypertension: it's when your blood makes too much strenght against your veins. Sugar increases your blood pressure, and can produce strokes and heart attacks.
  3. Diabetes: sugar is processed thanks to insuline, a liquid produced by pancreas. When you take too much sugar during too much years, your pancreas finally crash down, stopping the insuline production. Then, sugar cannot be processed, and it starts to attack your internal organs: eyes are blinded; rash appears on skin; your kidneys stop working; and your hearing decreases. Extreme and non controlled sugar levels in your blood can also produce sudden death.
  4. Tooth decay: sugar ruins your teeth, difficulting food chewing and digestion.
  5. Cancer: recent studies show that there is a relation between high sugar consumption and cancer.
So, please: next time you take a dognut, some sweets, a lollypop or anything else, please, before eating up it, read the label and remember what I have told you.
