The fact.
Yesterday, at 12:40, more or less, the power went out. We were at class, and possibly you remember that the digital board went to black. It was not only in Santa Amalia, but in all the Iberian Peninsua. The result was that about 59 million people were left without power.
Cause.
Red Eléctrica de España points that on Monday the 28th, at 12:34, there was a very strong oscilation in the power flow of networks. In other words: a lot of electricity suddenly "dissapeared". Concretely, about a 60% of the total. Why? There is no answer yet. Some people point that could be a cyber attack from Russia. Other people say that it was a "rare atmospheric phenomenon" (rare of what? A solar storm? An UFO event?
Consequences.
In small towns like ours, there were not big problems. We had to eat cold; no internet, no phone, and little more. But in big cities like Madrid, Barcelona or Valencia there was a lot of trouble. Traffic lights failed; so there were a lot of traffic jams. Also trains stopped in the middle of nowhere, with more than 35.000 passangers trapped. Other people were also trapped inside elevators, cable cars, metro lines... Parents could not pick their children from school on time; etc.
Fortunately...
Spanish electric system recovered in a record time. World is astonished about how in a few hours our country has solved a so big and so massive problem. Behind this recovery there has been a lot of work and prevention, blackout drills, coordination between authorities and security forces... Summarizing: today, we can be proud of our country.
