The life of a star. 5th grades.

Recently, at class, many of you asked me about stars. How are they born? How do they produce energy? How do they die? In this report I will try to answer all these questions shortly:

1.- How are they born?

The birth of a star is something very mysterious. It happens inside a giant nebulae. A nebulae is a great mass of hydrogen. In accordance with scientists and astronomers, in the birth of a star the hydrogen atoms begin to stick together, becoming into a bigger and bigger ball. Finally, when the ball is big enough, there is an ignition: the mass of hydrogen, due gravity forces, starts a fusion process. Thus, the star is just born.

2.- How do stars produce energy?

As said before, a star is born just when gravity heats the hydrogen, initializing a fusion process. And what is a fusion process? Well, fusion is a type of nuclear energy. It takes place when two similar atoms stick together, becoming a different one. In a star, the fusion is based on hydrogen: two hydrogen atoms become into one helium atom. During this process a great amount of energy is released. Energy that we perceive in form of light, heat and other type of radiation.

3.- How does a start die?

The amount of hydrogen which a star has is finite. So, when this hydrogen is over, theoretically the start should die, like a candle. But instead of this, the star becomes stubborn. "Don't I have hydrogen? Let's fusionate helium". And the helium fusion begins. However, this type of fusion is not as efficient as hydrogen. So in the process the star makes up for it by growing. Then the helium also runs out. But the stubborn start refuses to stop, fusionating now Beryllium. Then, Carbon; then, Magnesium. Meanwhile, the growing process continues. At one point the star cannot grow any more. Now only two things can happen:

a) If the star is very big, it collapses, and then bursts in a huge explosion (a supernova).

b) If the start is medium size (like our Sun), the growing process ends in the releasing of hot matter.

In both cases the only remaining thing is the core of the star. If the star is big, the core is a neutron star. If the star is medium size, or small, the remaining thing is a white dwarf star.

In the following video, a recreation of the end of our Sun. Do not worry; in accordance with scientist, this will not happen tomorrow. At least, 5.000.000.000 years remaining.

Professions. 6th grade B. Video.

Dangerous jobs. 6th grade B.

Today, before games, we will read a bit. Concretely we are going to learn about the five more dangerous jobs in the world, in accordance with statistics:

5.- Venom milker.

This job consist in to get poison from venomous animals. The poison is used for making the antidote, which can save your life if, for example, a cobra has bitten you. Needless to say that this job is dangerous.

4.- Ice road trucker.

In some cold countries, like Sweden, Canada or Russia, rivers and lakes get frozen when winter comes. The ice is so thick that it can endure the weight of big trucks and trailers. However, from time to time the ice breaks, and well... In that case it is not nice to be inside a truck cabin.

3.- Sulphur miner.

Miner is one of the most dangerous professions. And even more if you have to climb a volcano for extracting sulphur rocks. These people usually die young because of toxic gas released from hot cracks.

2.- Landmine remover.

During war it is common to bury mines for protecting determined areas. It is the so called "mine field". Then, when war is over, it is necessary to remove these mines. Here takes place the profession of "Landmine remover": a guy which, with a metal detector, goes here and fro looking for these deadly weapons.

1.- Lumberjack (woodcutter).

In big forest areas from Brazil, USA, Canada... we find people who work as lumberjacks. Their mission: to cut down and extract from forest very big logs. Every year dozens of these workers die crushed by the weight of giant logs. They also work with very dangerous tools: axes, chainsaws, heavy machinery, cranes, stell wires...

Are we alone in the universe? 5th grades.

The Earth is a little blue marble floating on the space, with very favorable conditions for life: water, atmosphere, magnetic field, oxygen... Out of here, life seems impossible: extrem hot over 5000º, or extrem cold ( - 273º); solar storms, radiation... Very hard conditions indeed. However, we do not know if there is (or not) life out of our plantet. Let's see some arguments in favor and against the existence of aliens:

In favor: Universe is very wide, even vast. So big that cannot be conceived by our human minds. Billions of galaxyies with billions of stars, many of them surrounded by dozens of planets... Why not possible that in one of those plantes life could arise?

Against: If there is life out of the Earth, How is that no Alien has come to say hello?

In favor: They haven't say hello because we are not enough important for them. If you meet an ant, "would you try to communicate with it?"

Against: Life, as we know it, is a complex thing which needs a lot of requirements for arising: water, carbon, oxygen... It is not very common to find all these elements together in a planet.

Gliese 667cc, a possibly habitable planet
In favor: As said before, the universe is very very vast. NASA is constantly finding planets defined as "habitable": this means that in those planets there is water, athmosphere with oxygen, etc.

Against: Let's assume that there is intelligent life out of the Earth. Here comes the problem of distance. The closet star to our Solar System is Alpha Centauri, which is 415.900.000.000.000 km far. And this is the closest one. Imagine the distance which an alien had to cover from remote areas of Universe. It would take hundred of years to travel from one to other habitable planet.

In favor: Alien's technology could be more advance than ours. Maybe they have found a way for travelling great distances very fast; for example, curving the space - time line.

The discussion could be eternal. What do you think? In favor or aganist the existence of aliens?

Halloween stories. Story by Julia from 6th grade B.

Children born on a full moon day can see the ghosts of dead people. And I was born on a full moon day...

When I was a little girl (about eight years old) I told my friends that I have seen a person whose face could not be seen.

My friends said it was a joke. But I told them it was true.

Some weeks later the face started to appear. It was my grandfather Faustino.

But when I grew up (more or less at 9 years old) I didn't see him anymore.

Halloween stories. Story by Daniela V. from 6th grade B.

The boogeyman in my sister's house.

Since my sister is married and has a child, she decided to by a new house; a bigger one. This new house had three levels. The first one was like a garage, whereby you entered. Then, upstairs, it was the second level. You opened the door and there was the livingroom, the kitchen, the bathroom and a bedroom. You went upstaris again and there were three rooms.

But the story I'm about to tell happened on the second floor...

One day, in the livingroom, my nephew looked at the door which leads to the garage and started to cry. My aunty tried everything to calm him down, but nothing. "What's going on with this little child?" She asked herself. From that day, the baby could not be in the livingroom, neither close to that door.

But the thing does not stop here. Some days later a little cousin of me come to my sister's house. And the same thing exactly happend: the child froze looking at the same door and crying again. And not only these two babies: all little children coming home got very scared with that door.

Seeing that, my sister decide to call a medium (a person who sees things that normal people don't). That person came and very soon she pointed at the door. She said "There is something wrong with that door. Something or someone who doesn't like you being here. If I were you, I would leave inmediately"

The day after my sister put the house on sale. They abandoned the building and never came again.

Later we knew about the boogeymans: evil spirits which sometimes break into houses. Only little children can see them. Maybe that was what the medium saw... in the door which leads to the garage.

A two new alphabetic wheels for Halloween.

Doing my research, this morning I have found two new Halloween alphabetic wheels. Today possibly we will play them at class.

Alphabetic Wheel I

Alphabetic Wheel II

Ghost stories by old pupils. Spooky spooky.

Some years ago some chidren told me these stories, based on true facts. I hope you'll enjoy them:

Story number 1. The ghost beside the cradle.

My mum told me this story. When I was a baby I slept in a cradle. One day my mother pass by the corridor and look inside my room. It was night. There, a dark shape was standing next to my cradle. My mum cried, trying to waking up my father. But my father couldn't. The shadow slowly vanished and didn't come anymore.

Story number 2. The blinking doll.

Once my sister and me were playing with dolls. It was night. We were looking at the doll when suddenly she blinked, looking at us. We ran away from there.

Story number 3. The shadow on the swing.

4 o'clock at night. I was awake, in my bedroon at my country house. I listened to the swing at the garden. It was moving by itself. When I looked by the window I saw a shape, like a child, swinging. Then the child vanished. In a recording from a security camera the shadow appears. What was it? We don't know.

Story number 4. The tall man in the corridor.

I was playing Fortnite at 2 o'clock, at night. I stopped playing and I looked at the corridor. There a tall and slender figure was walking towards me. Fortunately, it vanished. Curiously I was playing with a friend. He also saw the tall and slender figure, but in his own house. What was it? We don't know.

Airport and planes. 5th grade B

Here you have a test activity for studying. Considering that our next exam will be a typing test, it seems a good idea to do it at home.

Airport and planes test question type.

Natural disasters video. 5th grade A.

Natural disasters. Last days of Pompeii. 5th grade A.

I want to start with this macabre picture:

You are watching the remainders of people who lived (and died) in Pompeii. What did it happen? Why are their body shapes transformed into sculptures? In this report I will tell you about one of the most tragic and famous facts on ancient times: Vesuvius eruption and later destruction of Pompeii.

Setting definition:

Pompeii was a beautiful Roman city in the south of Italy. It was rich, full of great houses, theatres, wide streets, gardens, squares, markets... People lived there happy, celebrating festivals, working and enjoying the life. They couldn't imagine what was comming on.

The disaster.

On 24 August AD 79, at 8 o'clock in the morning (this is almost 2000 years ago) the Vesuvius started an eruption. In accordance with scientists, there were some different stages:

  1. In the morning: small earthquakes and some smoke on the mountain. People were still not affraid because they didn't know anything about volcanoes and how dangerous they could be.
  2. Noon: the Vesuvius spits a great cloud of superheated ash, getting the sky dark as if it were night time. In the afternoon the great ash cloud starts to drop pumice stones. These stones collapse the roofs of houses, burying alive people inside.
  3. In the evening: The stone rain continues. Many people run away from Pompeii; but many others resist inside their houses, because they wanted to protect their possessions from thiefs and robbers.
  4. At night: Vesuvius deals his final stroke. It spits a blazing ash cloud towards Pompeii, killing to everyone.

Consequences.

Pompeii was completely buried under six meters of stone and ashes. People forgot the story, and also the city. But in 1748 Carlo di Borbone started to excavate the city, discovering all these remainders that you can see today.

Money. Text. 5h grade A. London urban legend.

Jimmy was a poor man. He had never had nothing but his hands. He lived under a bridge, next to King Cross station. He liked to watch people entering the banks, getting money from the ATMs, paying at the restaurants... Many times he thought "One day I'll be rich. I'll enter the banks, I'll pay with cheques, I'll use credit cards, I'll buy diamonds and emeralds..."But later he got disappointed, telling to himself: "How am I going to be rich? Money doesn't grow on trees.

One day, walking by Hide Park, he looked at one bush tree and he saw a lotto ticket tangled on its branches. He checked the date and he discovered that the draw was that night, he picked up it, he put it inside his pocket and he kept walking. Next day, checking the lotto combination on a newspaper, he discoverd that he has won 1.000.000 Pounds. He thought: "Humm... Perhaps, indeed, money can grow on trees".

Sleep and football. 6th grade A.

A few decades ago, professional footballers spent their nights partying. Now, they are much more aware of the benefits of a good night’s sleep.

Gradually, club managers began to pay more attention to scientific sleep research, and for good reason. In 2011, sleep specialist Cheri Mah discovered that increasing sleep to 8-10 hours per night massively increased the speed and shot accuracy of players. Other research shows that a single night of inadequate sleep can increase the risk of injury, and 64 hours of bad sleep reduces strength, power and balance, and can even cause the body to eat its own muscles!

Consequently, managers started trying to improve their players’ sleep. Southampton Football Club’s manager Alek Gross, for example, forbade his players from consuming caffeine, sugar or fatty foods, which prevent sleep, in the evenings. Instead, they were given milky protein drinks which made them tired.

Manchester City player Sergio Aguero, for example, was finding it hard to sleep because his muscular body prevented his legs from closing when he lay on his side. He got a new mattress which matched his height and weight, thus keeping his neck and back aligned in the night.

James Milner from Manchester City found it hard to sleep after evening games, so would play computer games into the early hours. As a result, he was too tired to train the following morning. Setting a routine with a late bedtime, early rise and afternoon nap helped to fix this problem.

Whereas in the past, playing after a party and a few hours’ sleep was seen as a badge of honour, a good sleep is now considered an essential part of performance.
