Dangerous jobs. 5th grade B.

Next Wednesday we will see some of the most dangerous professions in the world.

5.- Venom milker.

This job consists in to get poison from venomous animals. The poison is used for making the antidote, which can save your life if, for example, a cobra has bitten you. Needless to say that this job is dangerous.

4.- Ice road trucker.

In some cold countries, like Sweden, Canada or Russia, rivers and lakes get frozen when winter comes. The ice is so thick that it can endure the weight of big trucks and trailers. However, from time to time the ice breaks, and well... In that case it is not nice to be inside a truck cabin.

3.- Sulphur miner.

Miner is one of the most dangerous professions. And even more if you have to climb a volcano for extracting sulphur rocks. These people usually die young because of toxic gas released from hot cracks.

2.- Landmine remover.

During war it is common to bury mines for protecting determined areas. It is the so called "mine field". Then, when war is over, it is necessary to remove these mines. Here takes place the profession of "Landmine remover": a guy which, with a metal detector, goes here and fro looking for these deadly weapons.

1.- Lumberjack (woodcutter).

In big forest areas from Brazil, USA, Canada... we find people who work as lumberjacks. Their mission: to cut down and extract from forest very big logs. Every year dozens of these workers die crushed by the weight of giant logs. They also work with very dangerous tools: axes, chainsaws, heavy machinery, cranes, stell wires...

Professions. 5th grade B. Video.

Next Wednesday we will watch this video and try to find out the professions of these people.

Polite language vs unpolite language. 6º grade A.

Recently 6th grade A voted a new topic related to bad words and bad expressions in English. On this post I am going to explain some of the more common ones, and I will offer you alternative (and more polite) linguistic options.

1.- Shit.

Shit happens.
Possibly the most common bad word. You all know what it means: the excretion of an animal. It is used in the very same way than in Spanish.

A more polite option is to say "crap". Not so rude, and also useful for blowing off steam.

2.- Goddamn.

Another very bad word in English, composed by God (supreme religious being) and damn (damn is a verb used to curse someone or something, like an evil spell) So, "Goddamn" means, literally, a curse cast over God. Do not use it, specially if you are dealing with someone religious.

A more polite option is to say "damm it". In this way you do not curse God; you curse an indefinite thing.

3.- Bullshit.

This word is also very common in English, specially in America. It is used in the sentence "This is bullshit", which means that something is false, uncertain or a nonsense.

Example: "My friend Joseph told me that he had caught a 20kg carp fish; but I know it's bullshit"

4.- Bloody.

"Bloody" literally means "with blood on it". It is used as a previous word before the insult you want to say. Exampes: "Bloody Hell", "Bloody Shit", "Bloody bastard" or "Boody idiot". The word "Bloddy" reinforces the strength of a bad word.

"Bloody" It is the soft version of Fucking, which works in the same way, but with a stronger meaning.

5.- Holy.

"Holy" means "related to something religious". Used in a Christian context, it is not offensive. Holy Host, Holy Bible, Holy person... But the thing gets wrong when you mix "Holy" with something disgusting. Expresions like "holy shit" or "holy crap" are very unpolite, and so not very recomendable.

6.- Oh my God.

Although this is not a very bad expression, it can be considered as offensive by some religious people. So, if you don't know the person, better to say "Oh my gosh".

7.- Moron.

Moron is a very bad word, meaning that someone has mental issues or thinking difficulties. There is no polite alternative. Simply better not to use it; and if you have to say that someone is moron, or idiot, better to say "This person has mental issues" or "This person has a mental disability".

8.- Bastard.

Possibly the less offensive of all these words. In Medieval times, a bastard was a son or daughter born out of marriage, and so non accepted by a man, normally a noble or king. Today it's an informal insult, softer than many other ones from this post. However, this word must be avoided in formal contexts, like schools or at work.

Well, and that's all. I really hope you will not use all these bad words. They are not for being used, but for being known and avoided. And of course, if some troll insults you with them in the internet... Ban him immediately!

Religions around the world. Top 5.

Human being is religious / mystical per se. From the very first moment of our existence, we have belived in something: the sun, the moon, the volcanoes and mountains, the lightning and storms... Those primitive beliefs evolutioned to more complex religious frames. Today we are going to talk about the 5 more important religions in the world, in accordance with number of believers.

5.- Sikhism:

It's a religion from India, created in the 15th century (from 1400 to 1500 A.D) About 30 million people are Sikhs. This religion was founded by Guru Nanak. The main thing of it it that there is only one God, benevolent and present in everything. They use meditation as a tool to find God.

4.- Buddhism:

It's a religion also created in India, 2.500 years ago. About 320 million people practice it. It was founded by Shiddarta, the first Buda. Buddhism points that we have to be good people in order to get the internal peace. It also uses meditation as a tool for achieving this goal. In Buddhism there is not God.

3.- Hinduism:

Another religion which appeared in India. It is considered one of the oldest religions in the world (scholastics think that it is 3.500 years old, even more). Hinduism is polytheistic: there are many gods and goddesses. about 1.200.000.000 people (1.2 billion) follow this religion. Every god or goddess is different: some are benevolent, other mischievous, some even evil...

2.- Islam:

About 2.000.000.000 people (2 billion) are muslims (this is how we name islam followers). Islam was founded by Muhammad in 622 AD (that is, 1403 years ago) It is a religion very simmilar to Cristianism: they say that we must be good people, and that there is one only God, named Allah. If you are a good person, you go to heaven.

1.- Cristianity:

About 2.400.000.000 people (2.4 billion) are cristians. We all know about Cristianity, because is the most spreaded religion in our country. It was created by Jesus, and it defends that there is one only God, but with some complications (the Trinity, the Saints, the Virgin, etc). Cristianity says that we must be good people. As the majority of religions.

Curses and bad expressions.

As we agreed, here we go with a topic related to bad words and expressions that you should not pronounce. First, a very interesting video I found about the topic:

Later we will deal with some more specific vocabulary, with a picture dictionary I have prepared.

Swimmingpools.

We all love swimming pools. Water is so funny and refreshing... Here, in Santa Amalia, the swimming pool is going to open next Friday, the 20th. The last day of school!!!

Although swimming pools are awesome, they can be also dangerous. Here I'm going to give you some advice in order to avoid possible problems:

  • Put on sunblock before bathing. Sunburn is something very painful. And not only this: if you do not protect your skin, you could develop skin cancer in a future. A factor 50 is good choice. Remember to put on sunscreen every 2 hours.
  • From 14:00 to 16:00, better on the shade. During this period of time the sun is at the top of the sky, releasing a lot of UVA radiation. Even with sunblock, your skin could get burnt.
  • Do not play at the edge of the swimming pool. On that place the floor is usually slippery, and you could fall and get hurt.
  • Do not dive head first in shallow water. If you do so, you could bump against the bottom of the pool, hurting yourself. Many people is on wheelchair because of this (spinal cord injury)
  • Do not swim in the deep if you're not a good swimmer. Many times people think they can cross the deep water, but at the middle of the pool they get tired, beeing at risk of drowning.
  • Always pay attention and obey the lifeguards. Lifeguards are at the pool to protect you: so their word is gold.

The Roman Empire.

The Roman Empire was a political, territorial and cultural identity which ruled a vast extension of land around the Mediterranean sea about 2000 years ago:

Roman Empire in 210 AD.

The Roman Empire was under control of the emperor. An emperor was like a god - king. A king because he had absolut power; and a god because he was worsiped as a divine figure. There were temples advocated to the emperor all over the empire:

Imperial temple, in Mérida.

Roman Empire was organized in provinces: Dacia, Tracia, Britannia, Aegyptus, Italia... Each province was ruled by a Governor. Santa Amalia, our town, was placed in the province of Lusitania; although on that time its was not called Santa Amalia. It was "Lacipea"...

Roman provinces. Trajan period.

The language spoken all over the empire was Latin. From that old language many actual languages come, like Spanish, Portuguese, French or Italian. For this reason it is not so difficult to understand what Italian or Portuguese people are saying: we still keep many simmilar words and expressions which come directly from latin.

Latin inscription from Mérida.

The Roman Empire was also a military power. All its territories had been added or conquered. So, the Roman Army had an undeniable importance. The army was organized in Legions. A legion was a group of 5.000 professional soldiers, well trained and equipped. There were about 30 legions in the Roman Empire.

A key for the success of Roman Empire was engineering. Romans had deep and solid scientific knowledges: maths, physics, calculation, watering systems... Thanks to this knowledge they could create awesome structures, like bridges, roads, sewers, walls, theatres, temples, bath houses... All these structures were a great publicity for the empire. It was like: "Hey, barbarians. Look at what we, the Romans, can do".

When talking about the Roman Empire, we cannot forget the importance of law; the so called Roman Law. Romans were capable of creating a very solid corpus of rules, concerning to all different fields of life: Family Law, Commercial Law, Criminal Law... Under this frame, peace and order spreaded all over the Roman world during the "PAX ROMANA": a period of about 200 years without war or conflict within the borders of the Empire.

Roman law written on a bronzce stele.

But after 300 AD. the empire started to weaken, for diverse reasons: climatic change, lack of food, barbarian invasions, economic crisis... Finally, in 476 AD, the Western Roman Empire collapsed. However, even today we can see its remains by everywhere, as remind of how bright and powerful once the empire was.

The mongoose and the rabbit.

Once upon a time there was a venomous and evil snake living close to a fountain. She lived alone, and she used to poison the water for killing the animals which drank there. One day a rabbit arrived to the fountain and drank water. Soon he felt bad, and he sat down on a rock next to the pipe. The snake said:

- Do you feel sick, little rabbit?
- Hi, snake. Yes; certainly I don't feel good. Do you know why?
- Yes. You have drunk the water I poisoned this morning. Sure you'll die in a few minutes; and later I will eat you.
- Oh, no! Don't tell me that!! My poor children are waiting for me in the warren. I have to suckle them, or they will die!!

The snake, seeing that may she could get some delicious baby rabbits, hatched a plan for getting them.

- Well, little rabbit, although you'll die, there's a solution. I can take care of your babies. Why don't you tell me where is your warren? I promise I'll protect them.

The little rabbit answered:

- I do not trust you, snake. But I have no other option. Ok. Listen. My warren is next to the river, in the waterfalls, under a willow. Go there and you'll find my babies. Please, take care of them!!

- You're stupid, little rabbit!! - said the snake - How do you think I was going to protect your babies? They're so tender, so appealing... I think they're going to be a nice dinner. Bye!!

The little rabbit died, but with a smile on her face. Of course that under the willow, next to the river, in the waterfalls, of course there was a warren. But not a rabbit warren. That night, the mongoose ate a succulent green snake which had arrived asking for some baby rabbits.

Ulysses and the Cyclops.

Ulysses was an ancient Greek hero. He was completely human (no god was his father) He wasn't very strong, he couldn't fly, he had no magic... His only weapon was his great intelligence and cunning.

Resultado de imagen de Ulysses travelsUlysses was king of Itaca (a Greek island) He was called to participate in Troy's war. He was fighting more than 20 years, far from his house. During all this time he missed his wife Penélope, his son Telémaco and his land very much.

When the war finally ended (Ulysses was the architect of that victory, thanks to the famous trick called "the horse of Troy"), all warriors returned home. But Ulysses couldn't, because a problem he had with Poseidon, the sea god. Poseidon condemned him to travel around Mediterranean sea during 20 more years. Ulysess had lot of adventures: he listened to the sirens, he travelled to the hell, he saw horrifying monsters... The adventure I'm going to tell you is about cyclops Polyphemus.

Resultado de imagen de polyphemus sheepTrying to arrive at home, Ulysses found a lonely island. Because his foodstuff and water reserves were decreasing, he decided to stop there in order to get some supplies. Ulysses took a big jar of wine with him, as a present for possible island inhabitants.

In that island he found a cave in which there were many sheep. Also cheese, lambs, meat... Ulysses and his men, very pleased about their discovery, started to collect all that stuff.

But suddenly a great one - eyed giant appeared there, closing the cave with a big rock and capturing them inside. He got angry because those small "thiefs" were stealing his cattle. So, Polyphemus (this was the name of the monster, who in addition was son of Poseidon) decided that he would eat them that evening as dinner.

Resultado de imagen de polyphemus and ulyssesFortunately, Ulysses had an idea. He offered the wine jar to Polyphemus. The cyclop completely drank it, getting drunk and asleep. Then, the hero held an spear and drove it in the giant's only eye. Polyphemus awoke. Checking he had been blinded, he opened the cave and called his brothers asking for help. Ulysses and his men sneaked out from there, fleeing away from the island.

Hot weather and Sunstroke. All grades.

Resultado de imagen de sun strokeVery soon we are going to face an ordinary heat wave in Extremadura. It is consequence of climatic change (every year periods of hot weather are longer and more severe because factors like CO2 or Solar activity) What can we do in order to prevent health problems related to hot weather? Here I give you some advices:

  1. To drink water. When it's very hot our organism loses a great quantity of water. So, we have to drink more than usual.
  2. To use cool clothing (shorts, t - shirts, sandals...)
  3. If you are going to stay under the sun, use cap or hat.
  4. To use solar block in order to protect your skin.
  5. Eat cool meals: salads, gazpacho, fruit and vegetables, etc.
  6. Don't practice sports and don't do physical efforts from 11 in the morning to 7,30 in the afternoon. Otherwise, you can suffer a heat stroke.
What to do if somebody suffers a heat stroke?

A heat stroke is when your body, as a consequence of external heat, increases its temperature. It is very dangerous, even mortal. So, the first you have to do is to lower the body temperature. How? Look at the picture:

Gym and crossfit healthy habits. 5th grades.

We all know that sport and physical training have undeniable benefits in our health: to avoid obesity, to prevent circulatory problems, to feel better and  happier... However, when training or playing sports, we have to be careful, because physical activity, bad planned, can be even worse than not physical activity at all. Here we go with some advice:

  • To create a WEEKLY PLAN. If we want to improve, we need a training routine. Twice or three times a week it's a good starting point. Then you can progresively add more training days.
  • To WARM UP. It is good to do gentle physical exercises and stretches before the main physical activity. Thus, our muscles get ready, avoiding lesions or cramps.
  • To COOL DOWN. Once you have finished your training it's necessary to lower the body activity. Good to walk a few minutes and to stretch well.
  • To have COMMON SENSE. That is: if we feel pain, we must stop the activity. Otherwise, we will get hurt.
  • To EAT WELL. You have to eat before and after training. Two hours before and during the two hours after physical activity.
  • To DRINK WATER. When practicing sport our body is consuming a lot of water. So, it's important to drink before, during and after training.
  • To SLEEP WELL. While sleeping is when our body recovers and improves. Without a proper time of sleep we will be in risk of lesions, illness and pain.
