Dangerous jobs. 5th grade B.
Next Wednesday we will see some of the most dangerous professions in the world.
5.- Venom milker.
This job consists in to get poison from venomous animals. The poison is used for making the antidote, which can save your life if, for example, a cobra has bitten you. Needless to say that this job is dangerous.
4.- Ice road trucker.
In some cold countries, like Sweden, Canada or Russia, rivers and lakes get frozen when winter comes. The ice is so thick that it can endure the weight of big trucks and trailers. However, from time to time the ice breaks, and well... In that case it is not nice to be inside a truck cabin.
3.- Sulphur miner.
Miner is one of the most dangerous professions. And even more if you have to climb a volcano for extracting sulphur rocks. These people usually die young because of toxic gas released from hot cracks.
2.- Landmine remover.
During war it is common to bury mines for protecting determined areas. It is the so called "mine field". Then, when war is over, it is necessary to remove these mines. Here takes place the profession of "Landmine remover": a guy which, with a metal detector, goes here and fro looking for these deadly weapons.1.- Lumberjack (woodcutter).
In big forest areas from Brazil, USA, Canada... we find people who work as lumberjacks. Their mission: to cut down and extract from forest very big logs. Every year dozens of these workers die crushed by the weight of giant logs. They also work with very dangerous tools: axes, chainsaws, heavy machinery, cranes, stell wires...
Professions. 5th grade B. Video.
Next Wednesday we will watch this video and try to find out the professions of these people.

Polite language vs unpolite language. 6º grade A.
Recently 6th grade A voted a new topic related to bad words and bad expressions in English. On this post I am going to explain some of the more common ones, and I will offer you alternative (and more polite) linguistic options.
1.- Shit.
Shit happens. |
A more polite option is to say "crap". Not so rude, and also useful for blowing off steam.
2.- Goddamn.
A more polite option is to say "damm it". In this way you do not curse God; you curse an indefinite thing.
3.- Bullshit.
This word is also very common in English, specially in America. It is used in the sentence "This is bullshit", which means that something is false, uncertain or a nonsense.Example: "My friend Joseph told me that he had caught a 20kg carp fish; but I know it's bullshit"
4.- Bloody.
"Bloody" literally means "with blood on it". It is used as a previous word before the insult you want to say. Exampes: "Bloody Hell", "Bloody Shit", "Bloody bastard" or "Boody idiot". The word "Bloddy" reinforces the strength of a bad word.
"Bloody" It is the soft version of Fucking, which works in the same way, but with a stronger meaning.
5.- Holy.
"Holy" means "related to something religious". Used in a Christian context, it is not offensive. Holy Host, Holy Bible, Holy person... But the thing gets wrong when you mix "Holy" with something disgusting. Expresions like "holy shit" or "holy crap" are very unpolite, and so not very recomendable.
6.- Oh my God.
Although this is not a very bad expression, it can be considered as offensive by some religious people. So, if you don't know the person, better to say "Oh my gosh".
7.- Moron.
Moron is a very bad word, meaning that someone has mental issues or thinking difficulties. There is no polite alternative. Simply better not to use it; and if you have to say that someone is moron, or idiot, better to say "This person has mental issues" or "This person has a mental disability".
8.- Bastard.
Possibly the less offensive of all these words. In Medieval times, a bastard was a son or daughter born out of marriage, and so non accepted by a man, normally a noble or king. Today it's an informal insult, softer than many other ones from this post. However, this word must be avoided in formal contexts, like schools or at work.Well, and that's all. I really hope you will not use all these bad words. They are not for being used, but for being known and avoided. And of course, if some troll insults you with them in the internet... Ban him immediately!

Religions around the world. Top 5.
Human being is religious / mystical per se. From the very first moment of our existence, we have belived in something: the sun, the moon, the volcanoes and mountains, the lightning and storms... Those primitive beliefs evolutioned to more complex religious frames. Today we are going to talk about the 5 more important religions in the world, in accordance with number of believers.
It's a religion from India, created in the 15th century (from 1400 to 1500 A.D) About 30 million people are Sikhs. This religion was founded by Guru Nanak. The main thing of it it that there is only one God, benevolent and present in everything. They use meditation as a tool to find God.
It's a religion also created in India, 2.500 years ago. About 320 million people practice it. It was founded by Shiddarta, the first Buda. Buddhism points that we have to be good people in order to get the internal peace. It also uses meditation as a tool for achieving this goal. In Buddhism there is not God.
3.- Hinduism:
Another religion which appeared in India. It is considered one of the oldest religions in the world (scholastics think that it is 3.500 years old, even more). Hinduism is polytheistic: there are many gods and goddesses. about 1.200.000.000 people (1.2 billion) follow this religion. Every god or goddess is different: some are benevolent, other mischievous, some even evil...About 2.000.000.000 people (2 billion) are muslims (this is how we name islam followers). Islam was founded by Muhammad in 622 AD (that is, 1403 years ago) It is a religion very simmilar to Cristianism: they say that we must be good people, and that there is one only God, named Allah. If you are a good person, you go to heaven.
About 2.400.000.000 people (2.4 billion) are cristians. We all know about Cristianity, because is the most spreaded religion in our country. It was created by Jesus, and it defends that there is one only God, but with some complications (the Trinity, the Saints, the Virgin, etc). Cristianity says that we must be good people. As the majority of religions.
Curses and bad expressions.
As we agreed, here we go with a topic related to bad words and expressions that you should not pronounce. First, a very interesting video I found about the topic:
Later we will deal with some more specific vocabulary, with a picture dictionary I have prepared.
